Description
Most swim screens are quietly built around freestyle and applied to everyone regardless of what they actually swim. This one isn’t. The core musculoskeletal battery — shoulder, thoracic spine, neck, core, hip and ankle — is genuinely swim-general, so it holds across strokes, but how the results get read changes with what you swim: an asymmetry that lines up with your breathing side means something different for a freestyler than the same asymmetry would for a breaststroker, where the expectation is symmetry in the first place. And because masters racing is short-course, turn-heavy, and often decided as much on the wall as in the water, this adds what the original distance-freestyle screen deliberately left out: a direct look at your explosive leg power for starts and turns.
Who this is for
Masters swimmers training or racing across any stroke — including IM and medley swimmers who don’t have the luxury of a single-stroke screen — who want to know what’s actually limiting stroke efficiency or shoulder durability, and whether their turns and starts are costing them time that has nothing to do with how well they swim between the walls.
What’s included
– Shoulder (6 tests) — internal/external rotation range, posterior cuff and deltoid endurance, scapular control, lat and pec length, and lat and shoulder strength. The highest-weighted region in your score, since the shoulder is both the propulsive engine and the primary overuse site across every stroke, not just freestyle.
– Thoracic spine & neck (3 tests) — thoracic rotation and extension, and cervical rotation. Rotation matters differently by stroke (body roll in freestyle and backstroke, less so in breaststroke and butterfly), and the interpretation adjusts accordingly rather than applying one standard across strokes that don’t move the same way.
– Core (4 tests) — prone and side plank endurance, an anti-rotation hold, and single-leg squat/step-down control — the stability underpinning every stroke’s connected, rotational or undulating drive.
– Hip (1 test) — hip abductor strength, relevant to pelvic control in every stroke and particularly to kick-dominant strokes like breaststroke.
– Ankle (2 tests) — dorsiflexion and plantarflexion range, relevant to push-off, turns, streamline and kick mechanics across strokes.
– Movement (2 tests) — an overhead squat used as whole-chain triage, and single-leg balance for proprioceptive control.
– Turns & Starts Power (2 tests, new) — explosive leg power via a vertical jump (a land-based proxy for dive-start power) and isometric leg-drive rate of force development (a proxy for wall push-off explosiveness on turns) — the part of racing that happens outside the stroke itself, tested directly instead of assumed.
What you get
A written report scoring all 20 tests Green/Amber/Red, with asymmetries interpreted specifically against the stroke(s) you actually swim rather than a generic freestyle default. A single overall readiness score, weighted toward the regions that matter most for swimming. A dedicated turns-and-starts power read, separate from the stroke-mechanics findings, so you know whether time is being lost in the water or on the wall. And a corrective prescription built from corroborated findings — where a compensation pattern and a specific test result agree, that’s flagged as a real priority, not just one number among many.
