Protect Your Joints. Reclaim Your Mobility. Walk and Hike with Absolute Confidence.
Running gets all the attention in sports labs, but walking is our most fundamental movement. Whether you are an avid hiker preparing for a grueling multi-day trek with a heavy pack, rehabilitating an injury or simply focused on maintaining independent mobility, joint health, and balance, how your feet interact with the ground dictates your quality of life. Our Functional Walking & Hiking Gait Optimization Scan combines the metabolic precision of a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) with research-grade Vicon Blue Trident inertial sensors and high-speed video capture. We analyze your walking mechanics under incline conditions—and even while wearing your weighted hiking pack—to pinpoint hidden kinetic leaks, uneven joint loading, and subtle balance instability before they transform into chronic pain or dangerous falls. Includes a complete metabolic walking economy profile, 3D inertial joint loading data, and a customized mobility prescription.

Walking Mechanics: The Foundation of Lifelong Longevity
Every single kilometer you walk translates to roughly 1,200 impacts per foot. If your walking gait features a subtle misalignment — such as a collapsed arch, a tracking knee, or a asymmetrical hip hitch—your body has to absorb that error thousands of times a day. For hikers and trekkers, adding a 10kg pack and a steep incline multiplies these forces exponentially, frequently leading to agonizing knee pain on descents and lower back stiffness. For older adults, subtle shifts in sensory feedback and muscle mass slowly alter walking mechanics, resulting in shorter strides, shuffling, and a drastically increased risk of trips and falls. Standard shoe shop treadmills only look at whether your ankle rolls in or out. Our clinical-grade dual-lens protocol evaluates your movement through both a metabolic and structural lens to ensure you can walk further, higher, and safer without pain.
The Dual-Testing Protocol: How It Works
This specialized walking protocol is tailored entirely to your real-world lifestyle goals. It can be performed flat, at a steep hiking incline, or while wearing your loaded trekking pack.
Phase 1: The Walking Economy Test (CPET)
Using the clinical accuracy of our metabolic cart, we track your breath-by-breath oxygen expenditure at your natural walking or hiking pace. We calculate your precise Metabolic Cost of Transport — exactly how many calories your respiratory and cardiovascular systems require to move your body over a set distance. If your mechanics are sloppy, your metabolic cost spikes, causing early fatigue even at slow speeds.
Phase 2: The 3D Joint Kinematics Test (Vicon Blue Trident Sensors)
We place medical-grade Vicon Blue Trident inertial measurement sensors on your lower limbs. These highly sensitive sensors track micro-movements in acceleration, braking forces, and rotation that the human eye cannot see, exposing the exact mechanical strain traveling up through your ankles, knees, and hips.
What the Data Unmasks
Our advanced reporting metrics break down your movement into highly actionable health and performance markers:
1. Incline Performance & Pack Weight Compensation
When a trail gets steep or a pack gets heavy, your centre of mass shifts. Our Vicon sensors measure if your braking forces spike dangerously on downhills, or if your hips are shearing laterally to cope with pack weight. This helps us optimize your stride to protect your knees and lower back from structural overload.
2. Spatial-Temporal Symmetry & Fall Risk Screening
A healthy walking pattern requires perfect symmetry between left and right foot strikes. We measure your exact single-support time (the time spent balanced on just one leg) and step-to-step variability. If the data flags high variability or a asymmetrical shuffle, it unmasks a hidden balance deficit, allowing us to actively intervene before it leads to a trip or a fall.
3. Kinetic Leaks & Impact Transmissions
Are your boots or walking shoes working with your body, or are they masking a weakness? We measure the literal shock wave traveling up your tibia upon heel strike. High impact forces indicate a lack of natural shock absorption through the foot and ankle, which forces the knee joints and lower spine to absorb the raw stress instead.
What’s Included in Your Assessment
Custom Environments Testing: A 30-minute treadmill walking protocol configured specifically to your goals (Flat mobility pace, steep hiking incline, or weighted pack simulation).
Full Walking Economy Mapping: Real-time respiratory metrics identifying the caloric cost of your current gait.
Vicon Blue Trident Biomechanical Data: High-fidelity inertial tracking mapping step symmetry, ankle stability, and skeletal shock absorption.
Multi-Angle High-Speed Video Analysis: Visual, slow-motion breakdown of your posture, hip alignment, and foot-strike positioning.
Comprehensive Walking Longevity Plan: A digital report detailing your stability scores, combined with a targeted strength, mobility, and footwear blueprint to keep you moving pain-free.
Important Session Preparation Rules
Bring Your Gear: Hikers should bring the exact hiking boots or shoes they use on the trail, along with their backpack loaded to its typical weight. Older adults should bring their daily walking shoes or trainers.
Nutritional Windows: Eat lightly before the session. Avoid large meals for 2 hours prior to ensure total comfort while wearing the metabolic mask.
What to Wear: Comfortable walking trousers or shorts. Shorts are highly preferred as they allow our specialists to precisely place the Vicon Blue Trident sensors and visually evaluate knee tracking.
