The Death of “Junk Miles”: Why Guessing is a Performance Tax
Moving from Gadget Guesswork to Biological Precision.
In your professional life, you wouldn’t accept an audit that was “90% accurate.” Yet, many amateur athletes train using age-predicted heart rate formulas (220 – age) and Garmin guesswork for training zones and VO2 thresholds. For a 45-year-old executive, this heart rate formula has a standard deviation of 12 beats per minute and, whilst Garmin devices are closer to reality, they still diverge from precise testing by 2-9%. For the time-constrained amateur, that is the difference between building an elite aerobic base and digging a hole of chronic fatigue.
Physiological Precision (The Internal Engine)
At the Château, we utilize Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)—the gold standard of metabolic analysis. We aren’t just looking for your VO2 Max; we are looking for your Ventilatory Thresholds (VT_1 and VT_2). And we test on the bike and when running, so your training has greater precision. We also use the CardioCoach Pro, research proven metabolic machinery, that analyses O2 / CO2 gas exchange, not the latest, clinically unproven gadget. This further enables us to determine how you burn fats and carbohydrates at rest and during differing training intensities, optimising your diet and race nutrition.
-
The Problem: Most high achievers spend too much time in the “Grey Zone”—high enough to cause stress, too low to trigger elite adaptation.
-
The Audit: By identifying the exact point where your body shifts from fat-oxidation to carbohydrate reliance, we can more accurately define your Training Zones.
-
The ROI: Training at VT_1 increases mitochondrial density, effectively increasing your “miles per gallon.”
Mechanical ROI (The External Chassis)
We treat movement as a series of Force Transmission events. Using Vicon Blue Trident force sensors, taking 1,200 measurements per second, we identify where you are “leaking” energy.
-
The Swim: We don’t only analyse you using video, we also use these sensors on your body to identify Roll Symmetry and momentum efficiency when breathing and on your wrists to look at the Precise Force path, stroke symmetry and efficiency.
-
The Bike: We measure the effectiveness of your Pedalling Technique using these sensors alongside any power cranks and we do this on the road, on your bike, so that these tests are ecologically valid, not conducted on a jig or turbo. Similarly we can measure your AerodynamicDrag on the road, on your bike using the latest technology, not a wind tunnel, therefore refining your position in the real world.
-
The Run: We measure Vertical Oscillation and Lateral Instability. If you “bounce” excessively, you are effectively climbing when you didn’t need to and impairing performance. And if you are laterally instable you are probably not recruiting stabilising muscles effectively or your choice of shoe is incorrect for your gait, either way risking injury.
-
The Fix: We condition to correct, “unwinding” any Executive Tax—the hip flexor tightness and gluteal amnesia caused by boardroom life—to restore your primary locomotive drivers – and awakening stabilisers and supporting structures to enable you both to become more efficient and less prone to injury.
In this series, we will explore the 4 Pillars of Biological Architecture. To see the full framework now, download our comprehensive guide below.
