Pool testing hides two things every open water swim demands, with push-offs to start each length, and a lane rope to hold your line. This two-step assessment tests you in both worlds — wetsuit, video and force analysis in the pool, then force analysis again in real open water, no wall, no rope — to show how much of your “pool technique” actually survives contact with race conditions.

A pool 25m at a time, pushing off a wall every length, guided by a black line and a lane rope, is nothing like the start of an open water race — continuous swimming from a dead stop, no wall to launch off, no rope to hold your direction, often in chop, with sighting replacing the black line. Most swim testing never captures that gap, because it never leaves the pool.

This assessment does, in two steps:

Step 1 — Pool, wetsuit on: Video + Force. The same multi-angle underwater video and Vicon Blue Trident IMU force analysis as our standard swim assessments, but in your wetsuit — establishing your baseline stroke mechanics and force output under controlled, repeatable conditions.

Step 2 — Open water: Force only. The same IMU sensors, now in real open water — no push-off, no lane rope, no black line to follow. This step isolates what changes when those crutches disappear: whether your stroke rate and force output hold up from a standing start, whether your stroke stays symmetrical without a rope to reference, and how much your line drifts without a line to follow. Underwater video isn’t part of this step — open water visibility doesn’t support it, so this half is force-and-motion data only.

Together, the two steps show the difference between what your stroke looks like in ideal conditions and what it actually does when you take away everything the pool was quietly doing for you.
